Website Design

Introduction to website design

A professional website should be one of the first things you create in your marketing plan. A website can be the hub of all your customer communications, allowing prospective and existing customers to find out all about your products and services at the touch of a button.

Your website is your shop window, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can even be bringing you new business whilst you sleep. Some small businesses successfully sell products and services all around the world through their website. Others see their website as a simple and cost effective means of keeping in touch with their customers without needing to pay for printing and postage.

Types of websites

Typically, a website falls under one of the following broad categories;

Non-editable corporate website (often referred to as static HTML site).

Editable corporate website (requiring a content management system eg. WordPress site).

 Editable, dynamic website, with more user engagement (login areas etc) and self managed through a content management system. (again WordPress site).

E-commerce website – with shopping cart integrated with a payment gateway such as Paypal, Skrill or banks.

Domain name

The internet is a fantastic way for smaller businesses to get great exposure and connect to customers they might not otherwise reach. A company website can bring tremendous value to your company with relatively little outlay.

Setting up a website for your company starts with registering a domain (eg, there are a number of places where you can check that your domain name is available to use and then order it. Some companies also offer extra services like hosting and assistance with building a website.

The best domain names are short and sweet, and will either use your company name or describe your products or services, that way your visitors will feel confident that they are in the right place and be encouraged to use your site.
